In this topic, you study Single Phase Motor – Theory, Types & Applications.
Single phase motor designed to operate from a single phase AC supply, and are built in fractional horse-power range.
Types of Single Phase Motor
Wide variation in starting and maximum torque requirements of the various applications has led to the development of many different types of single-phase motors. Hence, selection of a motor meeting the requirements of a particular application and at the same time having reasonably low cost has become possible. Single phase motors are broadly classified as follows:
- Induction motors,
- Synchronous motors,
- Commutator motors.
And shown below in Figure 1.

Advantages of Single Phase Motor
Now-a-days, advances in the design have made single-phase motors quite satisfactory in their smaller sizes (fractional horse power range). As a result, millions of them are in use in the commercial, agricultural and domestic fields.
Disadvantages of Single Phase Motor
In general, single-phase motors have less satisfactory operating characteristics (particularly with regards to efficiency, starting torque and power factor) as compared to polyphase motors.
Applications of Single Phase Motor
Single phase motor applications like, electric shavers, ceiling fans, portable drills, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, sewing machines, refrigerators, food mixers, hair driers, etc.
