Dynamometer is a device used to measure the torque being exerted along a rotating shaft and hence, power transmitted by shaft.
CLASSIFICATION OF DYNAMOMETER
Dynamometers are classified as,
Absorption dynamometer
Here, the energy is converted into heat by friction at the time of measuring.
Example: Eddy current dynamometer.
Applications: Engine, turbine and electric motor.
Transmission dynamometer
Here, the power being measured is not absorbed or dissipated to surrounding. But, it is transmitted either to or from dynamometer. Therefore, after measurement, power is available in a useful mechanical or electrical form.
Examples: Strain gauge transmission dynamometer, Belt dynamometer.
Driving dynamometer
These instruments measure power and also supply energy to operate the tested devices. They are coupled to either power absorbing or power developing devices, as they have to operate either as a motor or generator.
Example: Electric dynamometer.
