Types of Inductor

In this topic, you study Types of Inductor.

All inductors can be classified into two general categories: fixed and variable.

Variable Inductor

A variable inductor has some arrangement with the help of which flux linkages of the coil and thereby its inductance is changed. For example, it may have a ferromagnetic core or shaft that can be moved within the coil, or it may have a tapped coil.

Fixed Inductor

On the other hand, inductance of a fixed inductor cannot be changed by the user.

The fixed inductors are of following types.

  1. Air core inductors,
  2. Iron core inductors and
  3. Ferrite core inductors.

Applications of Inductor

These applications include carrier telephony, domestic television receivers, domestic radio receivers, wide-band pulse transformers, oscillators, signal generators, high-frequency amplifiers, etc.
