What are Capacitor Motors? – Theory, Applications & Types

In this topic, you study Capacitor Motor – Theory, Applications & Types.

Capacitor motors are commonly called as capacitor split phase induction motors. This type of motor is similar in construction to resistance split-phase type single-phase induction motor, except that the resistance in series with the auxiliary winding is replaced by a capacitor. The high starting torque is the outstanding feature of a capacitor motor because the fluxes produced by two windings on the stator can be made to have a time phase difference of practically 90o. Thus, this type of motor becomes essentially a two-phase motor. Due to use of a capacitor, the motor also has better power factor. Following are the three main types of the capacitor motors:

  1. Capacitor Start Motors
  2. Capacitor Run Motors
  3. Capacitor Start and Run or Two-Value Capacitor Motors.

Reversal of Rotation in Capacitor Motors

Reversal of direction of rotation can be obtained in all types of capacitor split-phase motors by changing the terminal connections of one of the windings.

Applications of Capacitor Motors

These motors are in very common use for fans, blowers, drilling machines, grinders, compressors, conveyors, refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, domestic water pumps, etc.
