Applications of DC Generator

In this topic, you study Applications of DC Generator.

Separately Excited Generators

Separate excitation requires a separate source of direct current and is, therefòre, usually more expensive than self-excitation. Therefore, it is used only in special applications where voltage variation over a wide range is required or where a quick and definite response to control is important e.g. in automatic motor control system. main generators in dc ship propulsion, electroplating. electro-refining of metals.

Shunt Generators

Because of their constant voltage characteristic, these generators are. commonly used for ordinary lighting and power purposes. They are also useful for charging of batteries.

Series Generators

Because of their rising voltage characteristic, series generators have very limited field of applications. They are normally used for constant current application. These generators were used quite extensively for lighting arc lamps. Presently, they are commonly used as boosters on the dc feeders for compensating line drops.

Cumulative Compound Generators

Over compounded generators are commonly used for ordinary lighting and power purposes. Over compounding is made to take care of the voltage drop in the distribution networks SO that the voltage at consumer’s premises may be approximately constant. They are more suitable in the Situation where the variation in the load is abrupt and large e.g. in traction.

Differential Compound Generators

These generators are used only in some special applications e.g. electric arc welding.
