Transformers are very commonly used in almost all the fields of electrical engineering. Only some of the principal applications of transformers are listed below:
Transformers are used extensively in ac power systems. This is because they make possible power generation at the most desirable and economical level (11 kV to 33 kV), power transmission at an economical transmission voltage (230 kV to 765 kV) and power utilization at most convenient voltages (230/400 V) for industrial, commercial and domestic purposes.
In communication and electronic circuits, transformers are used for a variety of purposes. They are used in these circuits as impedance transformation devices which allow maximum transfer of power from the input circuit to the coupled circuit. The other purpose being electrical isolation (isolating one circuit from another or isolating dc while maintaining ac continuity between two circuits).
For example, filament transformers are used to heat vacuum tube filaments. Input transformers, interstage transformers and output transformers are widely used in radio and television circuits. In the form of pulse transformers, they are used in radio, television and digital computers. They are also commonly used in the telephone circuits.
Instrumentation and control circuits are two more areas in which the transformers are used extensively.
