The entire opposition encountered by a current as it flows within the source (such as a cell or d.c. generator) from its negative terminal to the positive terminal is known as internal resistance of the source.
Every source has a certain internal resistance depending upon its construction. When the current is drawn from a source, there is always a loss of voltage due to this internal resistance.
