Synchronous Motor Applications

These are the following applications

  1. It is used where a constant speed is required.
  2. It is used for power factor correction in the factories, substations and in power houses. For this purpose these motors are run even without load in over excited condition.
  3. It is used in rubber mills, cement factories and other big industries for driving the air compressors, driving fans, driving common shaft, blowers and pulverizers etc.

Advantages of Synchronous Motor

These are the following merits:

  1. It gives the constant speed from no load to full load.
  2. The motor can be run as an alternator also.
  3. The power factor of the factory or organisation can be improved.
  4. It has higher efficiency specially low speed and unity power factor range.

Disadvantages of Synchronous Motor

There are the following demerits:

  1. Speed cannot be adjusted.
  2. More cost and maintenance.
  3. These are not self-starting unless special arrangements are made.
  4. It cannot be started with load.
  5. External source of d.c. is required.
  6. There is a tendency to produce the hunting effect.
  7. If it is out of synchronism, this tends to stop unless some other arrangement is provided to continue.
