What is Proximity Sensor and their types?

These sensors are used to determine that an object is close to the sensor before it makes contact. These are non-contact type of devices that indicate the presence of an object within a specific distance from the sensor. These sensors send the signal to the controller which alerts the gripper about presence of object.

It works on the of reflected light waves, elapsed time for reflected sound, intensity induced eddy currents, magnetic fields, back pressure from air jets etc. The different types of proximity sensors are:

  • Magnetic proximity sensor
  • Optical proximity sensor
  • Ultrasonic proximity sensor
  • Inductive proximity sensor
  • Capacitive proximity sensor
  • Eddy current proximity sensor
